Coronavirus 2019

Street Medical Practice offers reliable testing for both the active COVID-19 infection – the PCR RNA test and to test for antibodies should you have had the COVID-19 virus - the IgG Antibody test.

Do I have COVID-19?

If you have the symptoms of COVID-19 or have been in contact with people who have the virus and would like to know if you have the virus, the PCR RNA swab test is the most appropriate test to use in this situation.

The PCR RNA swab test checks for the active presence of the virus. It is most accurate to detect the virus between 1 to 5 days after symptoms first present. This is on average 6 to 11 days after exposure to the virus. Some may experience milder or no symptoms but still be infected with the virus.

A swab is taken from the nose and throat and sent to our regular laboratory, TDL (The Doctors Laboratory).  Results are reported in 2 - 3 working days.

A letter reporting the test result and copy of laboratory report will be sent to you by email or Royal Mail.

Cost:

  • If the test is part of normal consultation to cover other topics during the visit, the cost will be a normal consultation fee of £150 plus £95 for the COVID laboratory test cost (per person)
  • If the consultation is only for the COVID swab test and no other issues are covered during the consultation, the cost will be £90 plus + £95 for the COVID laboratory test cost (per person).  If other issues are covered then the cost will be £150 plus + £50 for the COVID laboratory test cost (per person).
  • Patients on the annual subscription, the cost is £95 for the COVID laboratory cost (per person)

Have I had COVID-19?

IgG antibodies are usually produced some weeks after exposure to a virus and can signify immunity.

With this antibody test IgG antibodies can be detected 14 days after exposure to COVID-19. This test can confirm if you had previously been exposed to COVID-19. It is important to note that if you had mild symptoms only, the test may be negative. Most people who recover from coronavirus have been found to produce antibodies. It is important to note that it is not yet known if an individual with a positive result for IgG following COVID-19 infection will be protected, fully or partially either from future infection, or for how long protective immunity may last.

The antibody test is an accredited and reliable laboratory based test. It is different to the finger-prick cartridge-type tests that the UK chief medical officer previously advised people to avoid due to their proven lack of accuracy.  The antibody test we are offering requires a standard blood sample taken at the surgery and is sent to the laboratory. This test (Abbott IgG antibody test) has been independently evaluated and verified. It has a sensitivity of 96.77% (this means the ability of the test to correctly identify those who have had the disease) and specificity of 100% (this means the ability of the test to correctly identify those who have not had the disease) when tested at least 14 days after exposure to the virus. This means that inaccurate results are very unlikely and we feel confident offering it.

A blood sample will be taken at the practice during a consultation and sent to our regular laboratory, TDL (The Doctors Laboratory), for a result within 1-2 working days.

Please book a consultation if you would like this test. It is important to book a minimum of 14 days after the onset of symptoms for the blood test to be reliable.

A letter reporting the test result and copy of laboratory report will be sent to you by email or Royal Mail.
